Green Event: 19th January - workshops and stalls

On Friday 19th January, the Rumble Museum is holding a Green Event to raise awareness of a range of different ways to promote sustainable communities.

We are very privileged that the event will be opened by Caroline Lucas, co-leader of the Green Party, who will speak to the whole sixth form between 1.30 and 2.30pm.

We are then hosting the following workshops:

Plastic use by Bart Ashton (LMH)
Times: 3 - 3.45pm; repeated at 4.15 - 5pm
Current plastic use is a huge challenge for us all. Plastic is an extremely versatile and useful product but it is very carbon intensive to make, it can release toxins, and it doesn't break down.  Micro particles of plastic are turning up in our food chain and thousands of discarded items litter the planet already. We use too much and we don't reuse or recycle nearly enough. How can we as individuals and as communities change what we do to avert an impending crisis?

 Solar power and energy by James Ochiltree (Low Carbon Hub)
Times: 3 - 3.45pm; repeated at 4.15 - 5pm
How much of schools' energy is provided by solar and how much is taken from the national grid? How can schools reduce their energy demands and reliance on carbon-intensive national grid energy? Using a mix of our solar data, schools' online metering portal and the national grid embedded CO2 numbers, we can see how much energy we can save, and how much carbon our actions have abated over and above the presence of the solar. 

Poverty, Climate Change and You by Paul Langley (Oxfam)
Times: 3 - 3.45pm; repeated at 4.15 - 5pm
Oxfam's Head of Public Engagement and Education will deliver a workshop on poverty and climate change, and what we can do to help.

As well as these workshops, the Oxford City Council Recycling Team and SESI Refill Station Oxford will be running information stalls throughout from 3 until 5pm.

Social Mobility Foundation Deadline Extension

J.P. Morgan Residential Programme: This two week residential is for students interested in Banking. Even if students do not have any prior experience in regards of this sector but think that a career at an investment company might be of interest for them, we welcome their applications. The residential is especially interesting for students who enjoy studying Maths, Business, Economics, and Languages. J.P. Morgan also offers a number of Law residential places.

KMPG Residential Programme: KMPG is hosting SMF students with an interest in Accountancy for a one week residential.

UCAS Progress

I want to say a very big thank you a) to tutors and b) to all Year Thirteen UCAS applicants.  We have made good progress, but given the large number of late applications, not all those who have applied recently will have their forms sent on to UCAS before the end of Friday.  During the holiday I will continue to work on the final details of some references and forms, and if I have made significant progress I will be in touch by phone or e-mail.  Otherwise, please be assured that forms will be sent early into the next term.  We are on track to complete every single application before 15th January.  If you have not been in touch about a late application of any kind, please make sure that you have talked to me by the end of Friday, and keep your tutor fully informed about your situation.

MUN at MCS Friday Feb 23rd to Sunday 25th February

I now have a Year Thirteen team of six for the Model United Nations.  I am trying to put together a Year Twelve team of five to represent Yemen. This would be a very good opportunity for Year Twelves who are interested in international politics. Students doing History at A Level would benefit from research the current politics of the Modern Middle East before studying them next year.

Volunteers needed for Food Technology department

The DT team are looking for student volunteers to come and work with them. They need help with:

• preparing ingredients for practicals
• cleaning up
• tidying up and putting equipment away

Balls & litter

We have banned full sized footballs and basketballs on the tennis courts.  Basketballs can only be used on the basketball courts.  

For the tennis courts there is a supply of size 2 footballs which students can either hire out (for a mobile phone deposit)  or buy for £5 (we will write their names on the ball in permanent marker). This service is from Mr Moreton's office for the first couple of weeks.  

A reminder about littering.  Students caught littering will be put into a community service for up to a week.  If they turn up promptly and work well at break and lunchtimes for two days they will earn the rest of the time off.  You will be allowed 10 mins at end of lunch break to get a lunch. Community service can include: litter duty, canteen queue support duty, year area support duty, PE area support duty etc.

NUFFIELD FOUNDATION - Offer month-long placements in the Summer holidays in a research environment for post-16 students who are passionate about STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering or maths). Placements might be in a university, research institute or company. You'll get great experience and it won't cost you a penny. Town Hall takeover day - e-mail me if in Y12 and interested in taking part

Your 6^th formers are invited to meet councillors and officers, find out about council services and spend the afternoon taking over from city councillors by debating and voting on key issues in the Council Chamber.

 

The topics for the debate are:

 

·         Social Housing

·         The Oxford Living Wage

·         Environment Policy and Action for Oxford

 

Takeover council agendas will be sent to you in early January so that your students can prepare for the debate in advance. Information about these issues can be found on our website, and staff and officers will be available in the morning of 28 February to talk about these issues and to answer questions before the debate.

 

The day will end with the opportunity to take a tour of the historic Victorian Town Hall.

 

Reserve places for your students on this free event as soon as possible – we are initially offering each school up to 10 places.

APP Residential supports high achieving students from low income backgrounds across the UK from lower sixth/Year 12, into competitive universities, and the top professions. We offer support through our four pillars:

1)      Mentoring by a professional via email

2)      Tailored skills sessions and career workshops

3)      University application support and guidance

4)      Internships with top employers.

APP Residential offers the opportunity to undertake a one or two week internship with a top employer in London with all expenses paid within one of 4 sectors; accountancy at KPMG, engineering at CH2M, banking with JP Morgan, and law. We also offer a Medicine Residential with the NHS, which last year was held in Middlesbrough. Whilst on their residential and in addition to the internship, students receive skills sessions and university application support. Their mentor will be form the employer that they undertake their placement with. Students also have the opportunity to experience life in the Capital, with evening and weekend activities.

All of this is completely free of charge. We organise their travel down to London, pay for their travel within the city, provide meals and cover evening activities. For more information on our APP Residential scheme, please see our website here.

In order to apply, students must meet our eligibility criteria:

·        Be in Year 12

·        5 A Grades at GCSE or 4 A Grades if they attended a school with 50% or less GCSE pass rate

·        Heave at least B grade at GCSE Maths for APP KPMG Residential

·        Be predicted ABB at A Level/AAB for APP J.P. Morgan Residential

·        Be personally eligible for free school meals, or be the first generation in their family to attend university, and attend a school with 20% or more students eligible for FSM

To apply, students need to complete an online application form. This will ask them to explain how they are eligible for the programme, as well as 10 assessment questions to talk about their skills and their interests in their chosen career sector, as this helps us to offer them the most appropriate opportunities. The application deadline is 9am Monday 18^th December.
