GRIM CHALLENGE!

Sixth Formers who fancy a challenge...

You may remember that last year we took a group of Cheney Sixth Formers to take on Grim Challenge: an 8-mile, off-road running race around an army training area near Aldershot. It’s a brilliant event and we’re looking to go again this year. Want to see why it’s so great? Check out the video here: http://www.grimchallenge.co.uk/grim-8/

If you’re interested, please come along to a meeting and see if it’s for you:
Thursday
Lunchtime
C27 (Mr Kirkaldy’s classroom)

Don’t worry if you’re not a regular runner or have never done anything like this before (neither had I the first time I did it), there’s plenty of time to train and it’s an event that caters for all abilities: having fun is definitely the most important thing.

MATHS CHALLENGE

Dear Year 12 and 13 students,

Are you interested in taking the UKMT Senior Mathematical challenge?
Would you like to try a lively, intriguing multiple choice question paper and represent Cheney School nationally his year?

Then please let your maths teacher know. It will be on the 5th of November, after school in W6, for 90 minutes.

It will look great in your CV, and the top 60% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate!
Here are some past papers with answers if you’d like to have a go.

Y12 ASSEMBLY TODAY - please register first

Please quickly register with your tutor then make your way to the main assembly hall for a prompt start at 2.40pm today.  Thank you.

UCAS Applications - message for early applicants

A reminder to early applicants to pay and send as soon as possible (please see earlier post for details).

It would very much help you PL if you could send them a form which you can find on the Cheney shared area under UCAS references - this makes it much easier for them to complete your reference if they haven't already done so.  They will have done their part by Monday 5th October, leaving me until Thursday 15th October to make sure that your forms get to UCAS by their (completely non-negotiable) deadline.

Please make sure that you know which extra tests you need to take, and have confirmed the deadlines for these, and whether you enter privately or via the school.  Again, the final deadlines for these are non-negotiable - please contact me and Ms. Simpson (jsi@cheney.oxon.sch.uk) with any questions but remember that the primary responsibility for making sure that you are entered on time rests with you.  Please don't just assume that things will happen - help us to help you.

Many thanks

Essay and Poetry Competition for Year 12s and 13s

Below are details of a couple of essay and poetry competition prizes for Year 12 and Year 13 students in UK schools.

Christ Church, University of Oxford:
All UK students, between 16-18, are encouraged to enter the 2016 Christopher Tower poetry competition. This year’s theme is ‘WONDER’ and the judges are Alan Gillis, Katherine Rundell and Peter McDonald. First prize £3,000; second prize £1,000 and third prize £500. Closing date 19/2/16. www.towerpoetry.org.uk/prize

St Hugh’s College, University of Oxford:
St Hugh’s College is delighted to announce the launch of the Mary Renault Prize for an essay on classical reception or influence by pupils in Year 12 or 13. The prize is in memory of the author Mary Renault (1905-1983), who is best known for her historical novels set in ancient Greece, which have recently been reissued by Virago. Renault read English at St Hugh’s in the 1920s and subsequently taught herself ancient Greek. She retained a strong affection for St Hugh’s: the College inherited her copyrights in accordance with her will, and these are administered by the Principal and her literary agent; the College archive also has some of her letters and papers as well as other material relating to her life. The new prize seeks to promote the study of Classics and to ensure that Mary Renault’s novels are known to new generations of readers.

The theme of the prize - classical reception or influence – is inspired by the fact that Renault’s novels have inspired many thousands of readers to pursue the study of Classics at University level and beyond. In keeping with the educational path taken by Renault herself, the prize is open to school and college students who are not studying either Latin or Greek to A-level standard. Essays can be from any discipline and should be on a topic relating to the reception of classical antiquity - including Greek and Roman literature, history, political thought, philosophy, and material remains – in any period from the Middle Ages to the present. For more details, see http://www.st-hughs.ox.ac.uk/study-at-st-hughs/awards-prizes/.

Lunch time talk: "The Many Faces of Catullus"

Dr Rebecca Armstrong, lecturer in Classics at St Hilda's College, Oxford, is coming to deliver a lunch time talk on Thursday 22nd October, 12.50 until 1.30. She will be talking about the Roman poet Catullus.

This talk is especially useful for AS and A2 Latinists; those studying Classical Civilisation will also find it very useful.

All are welcome to attend, and you can bring along your lunch to eat. There will be a chance to ask questions more generally about studying classics at University.

Please let Dr Robinson or Mr Gimson know if you would like to attend.

Thank you.

UCAS - Important Details

When your UCAS form and personal statement are ready to go, you need to 'pay and send'. That sends your form to Cheney, not to UCAS.  It is very easy to send it back to you if you have made a mistake, and you don't have to pay again when  you send it back to us.

Once you have paid and sent, your PL will finalise your reference and send it to me. After further checking and discussion, you will see it before I send it on to UCAS.

We expect to send all UCAS forms on to UCAS within ten working days of you paying and sending.  In early November a very large number of forms usually come in all at once, and it can take us up to fifteen working days.  We will do our best to process your forms as quickly as possible.  Do feel free to ask your PL or me (gently) how your form is getting on if you are worried.  The more you communicate with your PL and with me, the more likely we are to be able to do everything quickly and to a high standard.  Please be proactive.

A big thank you to the PLs for all their work and of course to you for all the time and thought you are putting into the process.

Early Applicants - please note change of time

Please can all Oxbridge/Medicine applicants come to L14 at 12.50 punctually on Monday for a talk about preparation for competitive courses from Ellie Rendle, outreach officer at Trinity College Oxford.  Bring the final copy of your personal statement.

Is Science for Me?

Please look out for posters about this event, on Wednesday 14th October, at the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism (Churchill hospital) in the Sixth Form area, and let Mr. Gimson know if  you want to take part.

Don't forget the Toxinology event coming up this Sunday morning at the Sheldonian Theatre.
