Legal Careers and non Legal Careers

YEAR 12 or 13.
Between 18th and 21st of April 2017

Oxford PRIME programme (increasing access to legal careers)

PRIME is a new initiative that Blake Morgan has recently become involved in along with twenty-two other leading UK law firms. We are one of the founding members of this profession-wide initiative, which creates fair access to quality work experience for young people from less privileged backgrounds. We pledge that each year we will provide a number of high quality places to young people (Years 12 & 13) from local schools and colleges.  This involves:

·         At least 30-35 hours of work experience per place
·         Help in developing key business and personal skills
·         Showing the range of careers available in a legal profession both legal and non-legal (such as IT, accounting, HR, and marketing/business development) and the potential routes into each career.

If you are interested in applying for a place on our PRIME programme this year, please complete the attached application form and return it to either graduateinfo@blakemorgan.co.uk or postal address on the form along with an up to date CV.

Lecture on War and Peace 9th March from 5pm

Cyril Foster Lecture 2017: 'Fear and Loathing in International Relations - the Persistence of War'

Speaker: Sir Lawrence Freedman, Emeritus Professor of War Studies, King's College London
When: Thursday 9 March, 5 - 6pm
Where: South Schools, Examination Schools, 75-81 High Street, Oxford, OX1 4BH

Abstract: "Although the 2003 Iraq War was linked to the "War on Terror" the case for the war was presented, at least in the UK, within the terms of the established framework of international relations, with the UN at the centre. The aftermath of the war pushed the UK into an arena in which terrorist methods were regularly employed and it struggled to cope. The lecture will explore what this might mean for future British interventions".

Advance registration is not required; this event is free to attend. Please provide photographic ID.

Girls in ICT

Girls in ICT workshop - this wouldn't be a school trip but it might be possible for Year Twelves to attend independently.  Please e-mail me this week if interested.

Thursday 27th April 2017, Oxfam House, OX4 2JY

Support your students to be inspired and empowered in their ICT career choice. Using Oxfam’s work to end poverty, we will tell our story explaining how and why Girls in ICT can play a key role in fighting poverty.

50 places are available for female students from local secondary schools, to take part in a day of inspiring interactive workshops and presentations. Students should be aged 15-18 and have an interest in pursuing a career in ICT. Places initially limited to four students per school.

Aims of the day:
    · To increase knowledge of the role of ICT in Oxfam’s humanitarian, development and supporter engagement work.
    · To encourage critical thinking about how ICT can help tackle the causes and consequences of poverty.
    · To explore the opportunities open to girls in the ICT sector and challenge the stereotypes around what these career choices mean.
    Sessions will include:
      · Humanitarian response: What happens when the lights go out?
      · Technology in Programming: How Oxfam harnesses tech to improve our development work.
      · There will also be an opportunity to take part in an interactive design challenge.

To express an interest in attending this event please reply to this email : plangley1@oxfam.org.uk  by Friday 24th February.

Parents Evening Wednesday 15th March and UCAS Convention Visit Thursday 16th March

If you have not yet returned your slip for this parents evening and for the UCAS Convention, please do so as a matter of urgency.  (The requested date for return when the trip was advertised on 5th January was Monday 16th January).  Extra letters are available outside Ms Dix's office - please collect one on Monday

Please make sure that either you, or a family member, attends the Parents Evening on 15th March from 6.00 to 7.30. It is one opportunity in the year for students and parents to get information and ask questions about your options at 18+ - it makes a tremendous difference to the quality of your preparation if you can be present with a parent.

Except for some students who have already been, and for a few who will be elsewhere, it is expected that all Year Twelves will be coming to the UCAS Convention - there will be no lessons during the trip.  There will more than 180 exhibitors at the Convention, including major employers like the NHS and the Armed Forces, as well as apprenticeship providers and Gap Year organisations - there will be something for everybody no matter what their current plans.

    Senior Debating

Annie Williamson our coach is unwell today. If you want to run a debate by yourselves, she has suggested the following motion.

This house believes that the media should be prevented by law from intruding in the lives of public figures

    6th Formers Outside of School

We have been receiving multiple complaints from residents of 6th formers congregating on their property and littering. Some of these incidents have resulted in students being very rude to members of the public. We will continue to get descriptions of students that are disturbing members of the public .

Can you please be careful where you gather outside of school, someone else's private property is not an appropriate place.

    Thank you

    Volunteering/Work Experience opportunity

If you are interested in volunteering to gain some work experience and to give something back to the local community then there is an opportunity to volunteer at a public lambing event next month.

The Earth Trust are a local environmental learning charity, which offers a range of volunteer roles.  Currently we are looking for volunteers (16 yrs+) with plenty of energy to help with our busiest event of the year.  Our public Lambing Weekends will take place on 25-26 March and 1-2 April and there are more details on our website.  The generous help we get from volunteers is invaluable for this event.

If you are interested please email Alison.Grunewald@earthtrust.org.uk for more information.

Law Talk Friday 24th February Lunchtime L14

A couple of Oxford Law Ambassadors (undergraduates keen to tell you about what a Law degree involves, rather than to market their own university) will be coming to visit the school on the Friday of the first week after half term. Please let me know if you would like to attend.

    Festival: Thank you!

Thank you to all of you who helped and supported so brilliantly at the festival yesterday. Many visitors, speakers and stall-runners commented on how welcoming, polite, and helpful you all were. Thank you so much for making everyone feel so welcome and looked after. This sort of thing makes all the difference.

Thank you, too, for being so patient and flexible about the disruption to your space during set up and the event itself; it was much appreciated.

We hope you all really enjoyed the festival and talks.

Festival of Ancient and Modern Science final details

The Festival of Ancient and Modern Science takes place tomorrow!  Everyone is very warmly welcome to take part in the amazing range of activities which will be taking place in Brighouse and Lane from 2.50pm. 38 different organisations are running activity stalls on topics ranging from Neuroscience to Genetics to Black Holes. There will also be face-painting and shows in Lane from 2.50, with science-themed refreshments from 3.30pm.

Because we are welcoming hundreds of visitors, including many primary school children, from outside the school, please note the following instructions carefully:

    1.       The Library, the ground floor of Brighouse and the ground floor of Lane will be closed for set up from the start of lunch.  Please access the upper floor of Brighouse via the staircase with the genetics timeline or across the bridge from the Russell building.  J37 will be open and staffed during lunch for students who regularly use the Library computers.  Room changes are posted below and will be on posters around the entrances to Lane and Brighouse.  Go quickly and quietly to your alternative rooms.
    2.      At the end of tutor time, if you are booked in for the Robert Winston talk, please go to the Assembly Hall straightaway.  If you are going to visit the stalls, please go to Brighouse or Lane. If you are a volunteer you should go straight to the stall you are supporting.  Volunteer or not, please welcome and help out any visitors who need directions.
    3.      There is some amount of space for the talks about Plants on Mars (3.45), Ancient Weaponry (4.30), Roman Medicine (5.15) and for Professor Grayling at 6pm, so please feel free to attend these talks in the Asssembly Hall during the Festival.
    4.      If you are not attending the Festival, please leave the school site punctually by 2.55pm.  Tutors will be escorting you to the gates on the Gypsy Lane site, so that the school site is ready for the hundreds of visitors who will be coming in at 3pm.
