Press Release
Fatima
and Sashka are holding an exhibition titled “Light/Dark” on 10th of
May, from 3:30 to 6:00pm. It will be held in the photography studio, art block
at Cheney School. If you have any inquiries or questions, please email fmasood38@yahoo.com
Sashka’s
work investigates the idea around feminism and women being able to uplift
themselves and feel liberated in their own body.
She
focuses on the journey women go through with themselves. Exploring self love
and becoming comfortable with their own bodies and their natural state and the
things the female body endures like the menstrual cycle, growing an he body
changing.
She
portrays this idea by using the female body in their natural state and placed
in the sheets of a bed to show comfort and security. Something women long to
feel without relying on nothing but their own self.
Fatima’s
work explores the idea of feminism by portraying the personal struggles and
fears that women face, such as being left behind, controlled or trapped, in a
very visible way. She does this by using mythical creatures that are usually
associated with positivity, such as fairies or angels, and portraying them in
very dark and negative situations. By doing so, she highlights the fact that
despite being an important part of life, women ‘s positive contributions to the
society are often ignored and they are not given the same amount of respect.
And even today, they are not given equal opportunities.
Sashka
and Fatima’s work links together as a contrast; whilst Fatima’s work focuses on
women going through personal struggle and being poorly treated and used. In
Sashka’s work, women feel uplifted, strong and liberated by their own self.
These two enquiries, Fatima’s “dark” and Sashka’s “light”, is the focus of this
exhibition.
