Information for Year 12

Please continue to work on your Personal Statements. There have been some dramatic improvements between Draft One and Draft Two and we need to continue this process.  It is very hard to write about yourself. The main thing is to use facts not claims. The reason for getting a good draft done now is that if you want have more facts, you have time to do so.
Students who want to continue and complete an EPQ are invited to L14 every Thursday after school from Thursday 21st June for the remaining five Thursdays. You will need to attend – and to talk with Dr Rayment and I regularly if you want to take your EPQ to completion in the autumn. The main thing is to be ready to write – and to have set aside a week to do so – over the summer.
There will be a number of opportunities for students applying for competitive courses from 18th June onwards. If you are hoping to apply for Medicine, Law, Engineering or any university course like to ask AAB or better, please come to L14 punctually at 1pm on Friday 18th May for a briefing.  In the meantime, please note the opportunities below:
Law: Chloe Romanis, a former Cheney student currently starting a Masters in Law at Manchester, will be visiting on Monday 18th June, and will be available to talk to aspirant lawyers from 12noon to 2.50, after which she will chair a debate with Year Twelve debaters.  Please e-mail me if you would like to meet with Chloe
Medicine:  there is an opportunity to attend a UKCAT course at Headington School – I have e-mailed all the aspirant medics who have signed up for previous opportunities though I don’t have a complete list – please send me an e-mail with the header ‘UKCAT Headington’ so that I can add you – I don’t want to miss anyone out, but some of you are much more proactive about getting in touch with me that others. It is essential that you read the blog and act on it.
Georgia Howlett, who wrote a very strong Medicine Personal Statement, and is currently doing a Foundation Medicine Year at Nottingham, will be visiting Cheney on Friday 22nd June during Period Two and break and I would like all aspirant medics to attend. Please e-mail me (with the header ‘Georgia Howlett 22nd June’)to confirm that you can do this.
Environmental Science:   there is a very exciting free opportunity at the Environmental Change Institute – see the poster outside L4.  You can apply directly but please copy me in – very happy to advise on your letters of application.
Oxbridge Interviews:  Cathy O’Neill, who is a very experienced interview trainer, will be running a session for potential Oxbridge candidates after school on Thursday 21st June. (This will clash with EPQ but I will those with a clash separately – please prioritise Mrs O’Neill’s session.  Please confirm your attendance via e-mail with the header ‘Interview Preparation’
Community Service opportunity:  if you are happy to dress up as a Suffrage activitist (or opponent, top hats provided) for an hour on the Year Six transition day on 5th or 6th July, please contact Dr Robinson.
