Interested in NHS Careers?

I am updating my list of students aspiring to Medicine, Nursing and other NHS careers, so that I can communicate, especially to those in Years Ten to Twelve about the various opportunities that are available.  Please send me an e-mail with your name, tutor group and area of possible interest if you would like to be put on my list. Please do this even if you already expressed interest last year - it is good to have an update.  Year Thirteens - no need to write to me as I think I already know your plans - I will stay in touch about possible mock interviews which should be taking place in December.

Visiting Speaker from The Mammalian Genetics Units at Harwell

Thursday 20th October
Period 5
BR23

Dr Rebecca Dumbell is visiting to talk to the Year 13 BTEC class about her research into metabolism, in particular metabolic disease and type II diabetes, and anyone interested is welcome to attend.

Dr Dumbell is a research scientist that works at the Mammalian Genetics Unit at the MRC Harwell Institute, near Didcot. Dr Dumbell is interested in how the brain and the rest of the body communicate in order to regulate appetite, body weight and metabolic health and since moving to Harwell in April 2016, her work has focused more on the underlying genetics that can cause some people to be more likely to develop type 2 diabetes.

If you are interested in attending please let Mr Routledge know by email (kro@) or drop into BR23 to let him know.

Yours
Ms Elias

In2Surrey

The University of Surrey offers a special programme for students from backgrounds which are underrepresented in Higher Education - if you have applied to Surrey and might meet their criteria, please have a look at:  http://www.surrey.ac.uk/schools-colleges/post-16/in2surrey-scheme. Most universities have schemes of this kind - it is always worth checking them out.

Road Safety

Please continue to pay very close attention to road safety as you leave the school site, crossing at the main traffic lights. This week a Sixth Former who was listening to music through headphones appeared completely oblivious to a car coming from behind her. This is a major cause of accidents.

Thank you

Thank you to the (very great majority) of you who welcomed Kev Eadie of Student Finance England for today's assembly, and listened carefully to his talk. Please let me have any feedback or comments.

Prefect Information

Information about the role of prefects will be given out in tutor time on Thursday - please look out carefully for it then and apply if you are interested.

Job description
Do you want to be part of an organisation that provides intelligence, protects information and informs policies to keep UK society safe and successful in the cyber age?  If yes we can offer you an exciting and fascinating career.   We’re looking for motivated, technically orientated individuals to join us in  September 2017.
MAKING YOUR APPLICATION

You should only launch your application from within the UK.
You should not discuss your application for this Apprenticeship, other than with your immediate family, providing that they are British. They should also be made aware of the importance of discretion.
You should not post on social media sites about your application or discuss it with anyone else at this stage. You will receive further guidance during the recruitment process.
DV SECURITY CLEARANCE

We recruit British citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work means that nationality, residence and security requirements are more tightly defined than those of other Civil Service departments.
You must be over 18 at the time of joining the apprentice scheme to go through the Developed Vetting (DV) Security Clearance process, which is designed to clear you for work with the security services.

UCAS and Personal Statement Progress

If you would like to meet with an Outreach Officer from Brookes about your Personal Statement this coming Friday Periods Two and Three, please sign up.  I may have promised slots to some individuals but have forgotten to put them on the list - please check it if you have had a conversation with me about it.

As you know the deadline to pay and send to UCAS is Monday.  Don't worry if there is something which you haven't quite checked yet - paying and sending only gets the form to me, and we can send it back and forth as many times as necessary until everything is perfect.  If you do want your form sent back, the best thing is to e-mail me - then I will get a reminder when I am at my desk and can actually do it.  Apologies that some corridor conversations slip off my list.  The same goes for the Animal Rights talks, interest in Law or Medicine, the Brexit Day and the Takeover Day, all advertised on the blog.  An e-mail, with the event/subject in the header is always really appreciated.  I am compiling lists for various opportunities and don't want to leave anyone out by mistake.

Please remember to keep your Year Thirteen Tutor posted about your progress - getting UCAS finished is very much a team effort - good communication is essential.

Sixth Form Extended Assembly - Tuesday 18 October

Dear Year Twelve and Thirteen Students

Student Finance England Extended Assembly 2.30-3.15 Tuesday 18 October

Student Finance England will be explaining how student finance works at a special extended assembly at this time.  Because it was not possible to timetable it at any other time, it will run for twenty-five minutes beyond the end of the school day.  We think it is very important for all Sixth Formers, even Year Thirteens who have not yet decided whether to apply to university, to understand how student finance works. It will help students to make clear decisions about the costs and benefits of university.

If you have a very clear commitment (eg a medical appointment, need to pick up a younger sibling from primary school) before 3.30 on Tuesday 18 October, please e-mail Mr Gimson before this Friday, and I will arrange for you to be sat near to the door so that you can leave quietly before 3.15.  Out of consideration to our visiting speaker and each other, we will be expecting all other sixth formers to attend to the end of the assembly which will finish by 3.15 at the very latest.  Please be punctual so that we can start on time. Tutors will take a register in the assembly.

Mr Gimson

Road Safety

Please show due respect for the Highway Code when leaving the school site.  It is more difficult to expect other students to cross Gypsy Lane safely at the crossing point by the traffic lights, or to push their bicycles along the pavement, if Sixth Formers are very obviously ignoring these rules.  Given the volume of traffic and the number of students there is a serious danger that sooner or later someone will be hit by a vehicle and badly hurt.
