Lysistrata - performance at Cheney on 23rd February

Classical Play at Cheney: Lysistrata

On Tuesday 23rd February, the highly-acclaimed theatre company Actors of Dionysus are bringing their modern adaptation of the Ancient Comedy Lysistrata to Cheney School.

The play is described as follows by Actors of Dionysus:

“This no holds barred comedy, Lysistrata, promises to be both hilarious and provocative! Follow our heroine, Lysistrata, and the women of Greece in their (not always heartfelt!) battle to deny their men sex in order to stop a bloody war. As tensions mount and frustrations erupt, see who wins and if peace is restored in this high octane, hugely enjoyable and absurdist version of Aristophanes’ masterpiece.”

Aristophanes is the one of the greatest ancient playwrights, and this is a unique opportunity to see one of his most well-known plays brought to life by a highly skilled theatre company.

The performance starts 7.30pm and finishes at 9pm. Tickets are £15 at full price and £12 for concessions. Tickets can be booked through Actors of Dionysus at http://www.actorsofdionysus.com/aod-production/lysistrata-2/

If you have any questions or would like to book tickets through the school, please let me or Mr Gimson know. Thank you!

Splash - interesting opportunity

You are invited to Splash at Oxford, a day-long programme held on Saturday February 27th at several Oxford colleges where you can take classes taught by Oxford students on a wide variety of topics. Classes taught this year include the science of flight, reading roman tombstones, the psychology of Facebook, and Anglo-Saxon poetry. You can choose which classes you want to attend and there is something for everyone. Splash offers a wonderful opportunity to simply learn about subjects that you are interested in, with similarly enthusiastic classmates, and taught by student-teachers who are passionate about what they are teaching.

Go to our website (https://oxford.learningu.org/) and check out our class catalogue and if anything interesting catches your eye feel free to sign up and come along. Splash is free but places are limited and allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

We hope it will be a fantastic day and a great opportunity to explore subjects outside of those normally taught in school.

1)      Oxbridge Classics Open Day 2016

The Faculty of Classics at Cambridge will host this year’s one-day conference for all sixth formers who may be thinking of reading Classics at University. This is a fun and informative event with sample lectures and briefing sessions by the Access and Outreach Teams from Oxford as well as Cambridge. Booking is now possible via the events page of: www.greeksromansus.classics.cam.ac.uk

The Faculty of Law is holding three Open Days in March 2016 – on Monday 14, Tuesday 15, and Wednesday 16 March.

This is an excellent opportunity to find out what it’s really like to study Law at Oxford. We have a full day’s programme planned including full information on our undergraduate courses and admissions procedures, plus a chance to hear about opportunities for careers in law following undergraduate study.

New for 2016! Teacher-specific information sessions will be held in the afternoon whilst prospective students will have lunch, a tour, and an academic taster session at one of our colleges.

We warmly invite you, and up to three of your students, to attend one of these Open Days.

Please use the link below for more information, details of the programme, eligibility for overnight accommodation, and to apply. Students are welcome to attend without a teacher. Applications will open on Wednesday 6 January and close on Friday 29 January, or when fully booked.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by phone on 01865 271491 or email opendays@law.ox.ac.uk.

15, 16 and 17 March 2016

The Oxford Pathways Programme will be holding 3 subject-specific Study Days for Year 12 students in March 2016. Year 12 Study Days offer students the chance to experience their chosen subject through a day of academic sessions run by Oxford tutors, as well as giving them an insight into life as a student in the Oxford college setting.

The event is open to Year 12 students at non-selective state schools or colleges in the UK. Places will generally be limited to students with at least 5A* grades at GCSE (7A* for medicine), and who are predicted to achieve at least AAA at A Level (or equivalent). Free overnight accommodation may be offered to students travelling long distances to Oxford, and attendees will be offered a contribution towards their travel costs after the event.

To apply, students should complete the online application form at www.pathways.ox.ac.uk/#y12study before Friday 29 January. Booking is by individuals, but we ask students to nominate a teacher at their school to support their application.

For more information, including a sample programme, a list of subjects available, and detailed guidance notes, please visit our website at www.pathways.ox.ac.uk. Enquiries may be directed to Claire Hogben at pathways@admin.ox.ac.uk.

5)      Mathematical Sciences Year 12 Study Day

University College (Univ) is delighted to host study days in the Spring Term 2016. These will give high-achieving students a taste of a university study and an insight into how they can develop their academic interests and skills beyond the classroom. Applications are now open for the Mathematical Sciences Open Day on 7th March.

For more information about any of these days please see our website: http://www.univ.ox.ac.uk/content/activities-and-events. Contact Nelli on access@univ.ox.ac.uk or 01865 286565 with any questions.

Bettany Hughes at Festival of Lost Cities

This is just a word of encouragement to come along to Bettany Hughes at 6pm at our Festival tomorrow (Monday) if you can. She is an excellent speaker and has made many TV documentaries on both ancient and modern history. She is doing a Q&A on "The Greatest Cities on Earth", and it's a rare opportunity to hear this very well-known and well-respected speaker without having to set foot outside of school.

It will be exceptionally useful for students of both classics and history, but everyone will gain something from hearing her speak.

Many thanks and hope you'll enjoy the festival! Full details of the event and other speakers are at http://eoccc.org.uk/festival-of-lost-cities

We recently had the following message from the Museum of the History of Science - please let me know if interested:

At MHS we are currently setting up a Youth Forum for young people, 18-24, to take part in various activities at the Museum, but with a particular focus on the collection of Islamic instruments - see attached flyer.

Do you think there might be any sixth-form students interested in taking part? They would need to be fairly independent types, but we are particularly interested in recruiting those with an interest in Islamic cultural heritage.
