Festival of Imagined Worlds props and artefacts

We are looking for any students who would be interested in making artefacts from the following Imagined Worlds as part of our Festival of Imagined Worlds in February! We will purchase any materials you need, and provide space and refreshments after school in the classics centre for working on these items!

We are particularly looking for a Tree of Gondor and Whomping Willow, the One Ring, large Alice in Wonderland playing cards, and a model of Minas Tirith, and very open to any other suggestions too! If you think you might be able to help make the Festival look extra-special and magical for students and visitors, please come and find me or email me on lorna@irisproject.org.uk

Takeover Day at Town Hall 17th November

Takeover Day on Friday 17 November.

 Your 6^th formers are invited to meet councillors and officers, find out about council services and spend the afternoon taking over from city councillors by debating key issues in the Council Chamber. 

The topics for the debate are: 

·       Social Housing

·       The Oxford Living Wage

·       City Council Support for Education

·       Environment Policy for Oxford

 Information about all of these can be found on our website, and staff and officers will be available in the morning of 17 November to talk about these issues and to answer questions before the debate. Takeover Council agendas will be provided in advance.

 The day will end with the opportunity to take a tour of the historic Victorian Town Hall.

Parliament Week Internet Freedom/Censorship Workshop and Debate 16th November

There is an excellent opportunity to attend a Parliament Week lecture and a debate about Internet freedom, involving three Cheney students and two MPs and two members of the House of Lords, ad the Bodleian Library on Thursday 16th November from 1-5.30pm. Please see me to pick up a letter - there are eight places available.

Chance to hear former Prime Minister Gordon Brown

If you are thinking of Politics, International Relations, Economics, Geography, History or Law - and you aren't going to the Avi Shlaim lecture at Oxford Brookes this Wednesday, you have a great chance to hear one of the most important economic and political leaders of this country in the last twenty years, when Gordon Brown speaks at the Town Hall at 7pm.  Please come to see Mr Gimson or e-mail him, and he can tell you how to get a free ticket.

Chance to meet Sheffield University student Wednesday 8th November morning break

If you are thinking of applying to Sheffield or reading English, please come to L14 during morning break this coming Wednesday 8th November, to meet Rosy Roche, who graduated from Sheffield last summer and is now working at the Houses of Parliament.

Funding for EU students post-Brexit

I think that this is good news for Year Thirteen students from EU countries applying through UCAS for courses starting in 2018 - EU students will continue, as before, to be able to access the same financial support as UK students for courses starting next September, even if the UK has left the EU by the time they complete their course.  We don't yet know what the situation will be for courses starting in September 2019 - students with EU but not British passports may need to keep an eye on the news, and may even wish to represent their views to the UK government at an appropriate time.
