Open Evening - Monday 25th January

On Monday 25th January, 6pm-8pm, we are hosting the Sixth Form Open Evening. As you will be aware the aim of the evening is to promote Cheney Sixth Form to Year 11 students  from Cheney and other schools who are deciding what they want to do after their GCSE's.

The best advert for a Sixth Form is its students so we need as many of you as possible to sign up and be a part of the evening. There are a range of roles you can play - from tour guide to a subject representative. See the sign up sheet in the Sixth Form area to find out more!

Career and UCAS Application Schedule 2016

Year 12, on Friday a letter was sent home as a follow up to Mr Gimson's assembly last Monday, the letter also details information about this Thursday's trip to Experince Bookes - please remember to sign up to this event if you haven't already done so.

If your parents have not received a letter there are spare copies outside the Sixth Form Office.

Museum of the History of Science Opportunity

We recently had the following message from the Museum of the History of Science - please let me know if interested: 

At MHS we are currently setting up a Youth Forum for young people, 18-24, to take part in various activities at the Museum, but with a particular focus on the collection of Islamic instruments - see attached flyer.

Do you think there might be any sixth-form students interested in taking part? They would need to be fairly independent types, but we are particularly interested in recruiting those with an interest in Islamic cultural heritage.

Work Experience Opportunity

Hello,

My name is Brian Mackenwells, and I’m the public engagement officer for the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, based in Headington – we’re a major research unit in the University of Oxford, with over 300 geneticists of different sorts examining the role of genetics in human health.

I’m just dropping you a line to let you know about our new work experience programme. It’s a week long, takes place between August 15^th and 19^th, and is open to any student aged over 16. Students will get the opportunity to extract DNA from saliva samples, use the polymerase chain reaction to amplify this DNA, and perform restriction digestions of the PCR products. There will also be an opportunity to meet lab leaders from throughout the centre, and find out more about the research going on at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics.

There are ten slots in this programme, and we’re going to be holding at least two of those slots for students from local schools, so we would encourage your students to apply. Congress to Campus

There is an opportunity to go to hear American lawmakers at the Rothermere American Institute on the morning of Thursday 3rd March as part of the Congress to Campus programme.  Previous Cheney students who have attended have very much enjoyed this opportunity.

If you are interested in attending an American university, we have been offered a visit by some American students from Stanford University, who will be able to tell you about admissions, American student life. 

There is also the possibility of a visit by a professor of politics who would talk about American politics in this election year.

Finally, I have had the following e-mail about a Sutton Trust opportunity - which a student took up last summer and very greatly enjoyed: 

I am emailing with an opportunity from the Sutton Trust, which introduces students from low income families to the idea of university. They are running a week-long, free of charge summer school at a university in the United States for Year 12 students from the UK. Applications close on 20^th January, and all the information can be found on their website.
