The Education Debate: Is it time to decolonise the curriculum? Wednesday 5 July, 6-7.30pm, Magdalen College School.
The demand to decolonise education is growing ever louder. From Rhodes Must Fall in South Africa, and here in Oxford, to the “Why is my curriculum so white?” campaign at University College London, there is a call to make school and university curricula more representative and diverse. In January this year, students and academics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London hit the headlines with their campaign to Decolonise Our Minds because of newspaper reports that this would mean dropping Plato, Locke and Kant from the Philosophy syllabus. Meanwhile, the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford announced a major shakeup to its curriculum last month, as undergraduates will now have to sit a compulsory paper on non-British, non-European, history.
Are these sensible steps towards a more inclusive and diverse educational system, or an attempt to rewrite history around contemporary obsessions with identity and culture? Does the focus on recognising excluded voices serve to make a more inclusive educational system, or does the demand to decolonise risk reflecting back to students their own cultural identity rather than taking them beyond their existing cultural and intellectual horizons?
Speakers:
Rekgotsofetse (Kgotsi) Chikane is National President of InkuluFreeHeid, a non-partisan youth-led organisation that seeks to deepen democracy in South Africa. He is a former Mandela Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford, and a recent YALI Mandela Washington Fellow. Kgotsi was one of the leaders of the original Rhodes Must Fall campaign in South Africa.
Dr Cheryl Hudson is Lecturer in American History at the University of Liverpool. She was formerly the Academic Programme Director at the Rothermere American Institute, University of Oxford and was an Associate of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education, University of Kent, 2015-16. She has taught at Oxford, Sheffield, Coventry, Vanderbilt and Sussex. She is the author of, amongst other things, A Century of Academic Freedom (2016).
Professor Pekka Hämäläinen is Rhodes Professor of American History at the University of Oxford, and a fellow of St Catherine’s College, Oxford. He is a historian of early and nineteenth-century North America, specialising in indigenous, colonial, imperial, environmental, and borderlands history. His book, The Comanche Empire (Yale, 2008), received twelve awards, including the Bancroft Prize, the Merle Curti Award, and the Caughey Prize and has been translated into Spanish and French.
Kenan Malik is a writer, lecturer and broadcaster. He has presented Analysis, on BBC Radio 4, and Nightwaves, on BBC Radio 3, and was a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4’s The Moral Maze. Kenan is the author of numerous books, including Multiculturalism and its Discontents: (Seagull, 2013),  From Fatwa to Jihad: The Rushdie Affair and its Legacy(Atlantic, 2009 ), Strange Fruit: Why Both Sides are Wrong in the Race Debate (Oneworld, 2008), and The Meaning of Race: Race, History and Culture in Western Society (Palgrave, 1996). His latest book is The Quest for a Moral Compass: A Global History of Ethics (2014).
I have put together an expert and opinionated panel who come from very different sides on this issue. Once they have given us their initial thoughts I will be keen to come out to the audience for points and arguments. For this reason, I would like as many students as possible to have the opportunity to attend.

Brookes Summer Schools during WE week

If you don't have anything organised for the Work Experience week, these might be very well worth putting in a quick last minute application for:

There are still places available on four of our fully-funded Discover Brookes summer schools for Year 12 students:
  • Real Estate Management - 3rd to 5th July
  • Music - 3rd to 5th July
  • Sport and Exercise Science - 12th to 14th July
  • International Hospitality Management 17th to 19th July
The summer schools are a great chance for students to look into a degree that they would otherwise perhaps not have considered.

Please encourage your students to apply as soon as possible if you think this experience could be beneficial for them. Application forms are attached and can be downloaded. A paper poster is making your way to you.

Summer School key information:
  • There are no costs for participants, food, accommodation & transport is paid for.
  • Students will be staying in their own en-suite rooms in halls of residence.
  • They will receive a mix of academic and university preparation sessions
Some information about the subject pathways below:

Nearly everything we do involves property. The sector is booming and the demand for graduates with the right knowledge and skills set is high.
Real Estate Management is a multidisciplinary course and includes subject areas such as economics, law, and planning and construction.  It is suitable for pupils who are interested in business, economics and who could see themselves working for investment firms, as property managers or surveyors.

 Music:
At Oxford Brookes, you don’t need A-Levels in Music or a BTEC to apply for the course . Anyone who can demonstrate their competence and passion for music can apply.
Music is one of the most versatile university degrees: it includes performance, composition, music history and music theory. The elements of the course prepare students for work in the music sector but also provide skills for any career that involves creative problem solving and critical thinking.
For a happier, healthier society, there is an increasing need for professionals trained in interpreting the health consequences of our current lifestyles.Students also learn to cater for the more performance-focused requirements of athletes. Students will get a taster of some of the aspects of this multidisciplinary course, which includes subjects like nutrition, Biomechanics and Sports Psychology.

This course will equip students with the knowledge, skills and attributes to become an effective and ethical manager in international hospitality. They will learn about finance, human resources and events management and go on a one-year paid work placement. Students have excellent career prospects and work in management positions with international employers such as Mariott or Four Seasons.

Discover Brookes is aimed at students from groups underrepresented in Higher Education. Ideally applicants should fulfill one or more of the listed on our website[http://./]., but we would encourage everyone to apply
If you have any questions, please contact the Discover Brookes Team at discover@brookes.ac.uk                 Tel: 01865/483787

The timetable for the week is displayed on the windows on the ramp in the Sixth Form area. If you have any clashes please come and see me before Friday this week (9th June) so I can sort something else out for you.

Please pay attention to where your exam is - most of them are in the gym but some may be elsewhere.

The seating plans for each exam will be displayed outside the exam.

All morning exams start at 8:30.This means you have to be sat down in your seat so the exam can start at 8:30. Please get to the exam venue at 8:20 at the latest so we can start the exams on time.

Afternoon exams will start at 13:00 again please arrive before 13:00 so the exam can start on time - the earlier it starts the earlier you can leave!

Please take these exams seriously as the grades you get on these exams will be the basis for your UCAS predicted grades. We will also use these grades to assess whether you will be allowed to start Y13 in September.

Lastly - if you think you are entitled to extra time/rest breaks/a prompter/any other exams access please come and see me to make sure this has all been put in place for you.

M1 exam and DofE exped

Any students sitting the M1 exam on Friday 16 June that wish to defer their expedition until next year need to see me personally with a note from home by the end of the day. If you fail to see me by the end of the day it will become more difficult to cancel your place on the trip.

New Zealand Adventure Tourism Internships available for Gap year students

Limited places LEFT for new zealand outdoor internship  - SEPTEMber 2017
Travel New Zealand. Gain world-recognised qualifications. Get employed in front-line adventure tourism roles.
We are looking for a limited number of students to join us for our  Adventure Guide Program based in New Zealand this September.

Interns will embark on a remarkable eight week journey of learning, experiences and coaching - in the classroom and predominantly in NZ's diverse and spectacular outdoors, focusing on individual skills and group leadership. They will gain world-recognised New Zealand outdoor guiding qualifications, and on completion will be placed in some incredible front-line adventure tourism roles based in Queenstown - working for companies involved with jet-boating, climbing, hiking, bungy jumping and much more.

This program is a well constructed stepping stone into the adventure tourism industry as a guide, but also is the perfect GAP year option - offering qualifications and adventure all in one - perfect for the student who has not quite decided what is the next step.

Summer Research experience

Message from In2Science:

"We have also had a huge influx of scientists within the University of Oxford eager to take students over the summer and it would be fantastic if you could encourage your Year 12 cohort to apply for in2scienceUK."

This is a great opportunity for any Year 12s who are FSM or Bursary or have parents who haven't been to Uni.

They have extended the deadline to THIS FRIDAY because of the extra placements available, particularly in Chemistry or Biology/Neuroscience.  (Ignore any contradictory information on the website)

Even if you have arranged something for work experience week I suggest you do this AS WELL.  It is such a great way to work out what you want to study/do after sixth form.

Gap Year Idea for a very political person

Here is the link to the job opportunity to work as a Parliamentary Assistant, based in Westminster, London.

The scheme wants to widen access to Parliament by offering a 9 month paid placement to people who have the skills, passion and potential to work here but don’t have access to the traditional routes in. We encourage applications from across all nations and regions of the UK. There are 10 places in total.

The deadline is June 11th, and interviews will be in July. The general election doesn't impact the recruitment as the start date for the job is the first week of October 2017.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to receiving applications from the students you work with.
