Student voice recordings for the Rumble Museum

As many of you will have seen, we have been filling the display cabinets in the Library stage area with a broad variety of artefacts, ranging from lithic weapons dating to 8000 - 4000 BC to very modern items such as an iPod! The artefacts are in cabinets representing different themes, and you can find webpages detailing each of these artefacts on the Rumble Museum website at www.rumblemuseum.org.uk
We are now creating information boards and labels for each item. Some of these boards are very large and detailed, picking out particularly interesting items. Others will be small and will simply contain a few lines with a QR code which will take people straight to the website page for the artefact.
We are looking for interested students to record their voices reading out the pages on the objects, so that people can have an audio guide to the items. If you would like to have your voice recorded reading out a few lines about a particular artefact, please speak to myself or Mr Gimson.
Your voice recording will then be a permanent feature of the collections guide on the website for the whole community. You can choose to talk about an object from a particular era or area of history which interests you - if you take a look at the objects so far, you will see the collection is very broad, and always growing!
Thank you very much.

Theatre Workshop Friday 5th May 11.50 to 1.20

Next Friday is a very interesting workshop being run by Anwar Akhtar, who produced Dara (a play about a Sufi Mogul prince at a key moment in Indian history) at the National Theatre two years ago. It is a very interesting opportunity for anyone interested in Theatre, Journalism, Human Rights or South Asian history.  If you would like to take part please talk to Ms Mortimer or e-mail her (pmo@cheney.oxon.sch.uk). There is also the chance to see a screening of the play in Oxford on Friday evening - this is a public event and not a school trip, but you can sign up by going to:

For more information about Dara, please go to:  http://www.thesamosa.co.uk/2017/04/12/why-dara-still-speaks-to-us-today-19/

Recent Message from Student Finance England - deadline 26 May

If you work with students who are starting university or college in 2017/18, it’s time to remind them that the deadline to apply for student finance is 26 May 2017.
Students who don’t apply before this date might not get their money in time for the start of their course, so encourage them to apply now in three easy steps.
  1. Register online
It’s quick and easy to apply online at www.gov.uk/studentfinance
  2. Fill in the application
They don’t need a confirmed place. They should apply using their preferred choice of course and simply change the details online later if they need to.
  3. Print, sign and return the declaration form
We can’t pay them until they do! Before they send it to us, they should check that they’ve signed their full name and used the current date – not their date of birth. Any mistakes could delay their application.
If they’ve already started their application online, remind them to log back into their student finance account now and finish it before the deadline.
For everything students need to know about student finance, they should visit SFE’s student finance zone on The Student Room.
There’s also a range of resources for you on the practitioner website that give more information about what students can get, how they apply and what evidence they need to complete their application.
Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and watch our films on YouTube to get regular updates.

Professor Robert Gildea Talk L14 Period Five Thursday

A reminder to all Year Twelve Historians that Professor Robert Gildea will be talking about the French Revolution in L14 during Period Five tomorrow Thursday 6th April from 1.30pm.  Please be punctual.  Year Thirteens are also very welcome indeed and are encouraged to come if they don't have a lesson - it will be a different talk to the excellent one you heard last year.

Year Books/Leavers Hoodie

As we’re approaching the end of the year, we’ve started discussing yearbooks.

We’re very aware of the time and effort this would involve, and we would need a large team of people to help- however as we’re getting closer to exams, and with prom organisation on the way, we thought it would be good to consider other options.

We want to ensure that everyone has something at the end of the year to remember your time at Cheney, and another option is a leavers hoodie.

We would still need a small group of people to help with the design, but it would be much more straightforward.

However, if there is an overwhelming majority who would prefer a yearbook, we can look further into that too. I’ve created an online poll- please vote for which you’d prefer!

Thanks,

Aisha

Firm and Insurance Choices

Just a reminder that if you have received all your offers you should be deciding on your Firm and Insurance choices before 4th May. This gives you the holiday to think about things and make any more visits you feel would be helpful.

Student finance applications should also be well underway by now.  I recommend completing your application over the holiday if you are starting university in September 2017.

Please see me if you have any questions.

Y13 Chemists

Your revision/exam paper schedule can be found on the Y13 Chemistry blog. Please check this so you know what to expect after the holidays.

Yours
Ms Elias

Prom Committee

Coming close to the Easter holiday, the Student Leadership Team would like to put together a prom committee to help organise this year's summer prom.

Summer prom is not only a farewell to current year 13’s but also to celebrate the sixth form as a whole- so we are expecting many to get involved.

Last years winter ball meetings didn't have a huge turnout resulting in ideas not being communicated effectively, however, we need active and motivated people to get this off the ground.

From fundraising to ideas, if you want to get involved then please come to the BR block upstairs meeting room, adjacent to the office, on Friday(7th April) at lunchtime for a quick meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you there,
Asam
