The
summer school is for enthusiastic and committed students who are either
considering applying to study the Classical world at university, or who
would like to know more about the various
subjects associated with it (Classical literature, Ancient History,
Classical Greek, Archaeology), and are interested in studying these
subjects intensively over the course of a week. The summer school
provides a stimulating and challenging academic programme
that will develop both your knowledge and ability in the study of the
Classical world. The academic programme has been designed to give you a
taster of what it is like to be an undergraduate studying Classical
subjects at Oxford. You’ll attend daily language
classes in Ancient Greek led by graduate tutors, a seminar series
focusing on ‘Race and Ethnicity in Antiquity’ delivered by tutors
from the Faculty of Classics, visit the Ashmolean Museum, and receive
guidance and advice from academic mentors to write
a short essay on a Classical subject. At the end of the week’s
programme, having written your short essay, you will take part in a
20–30 minute Oxford-style tutorial, during which you will receive
individual feedback on your work, and a talk on applying for
and studying Classical subjects at University. The sessions don’t
require any prior knowledge but you will be required to do preparatory
reading before the summer school and attend daily language classes,
seminars, and mentoring sessions to provide you with
all the information and resources you will need to complete your
tutorial essay by the end of the week. In addition to the academic work,
you’ll be living, eating, and working in Wadham College and the Faculty
of Classics alongside current students.
