Classical Civilisation AS module details for Y13s

The result of the group vote is that the following two modules will be studied towards exam next year:
  • Greek Tragedy in its Context
  • Homer's Odyssey and Society

You will be able to collect your UCAS predictor results on 18th August; in terms of summer work, the most useful thing you can do is to start reading the prescribed texts for these two modules. You can find the details here:

Thanks very much and have a great rest-of-summer!

Classics Summer School at Wadham - Cheney places

Wadham College Outreach has emailed me this morning offering spaces on their Summer School to any Cheney Year 12s who might like to attend - see details below and please contact the email address below if you are keen to attend:

The summer school is for enthusiastic and committed students who are either considering applying to study the Classical world at university, or who would like to know more about the various subjects associated with it (Classical literature, Ancient History, Classical Greek, Archaeology), and are interested in studying these subjects intensively over the course of a week. The summer school provides a stimulating and challenging academic programme that will develop both your knowledge and ability in the study of the Classical world. The academic programme has been designed to give you a taster of what it is like to be an undergraduate studying Classical subjects at Oxford. You’ll attend daily language classes in Ancient Greek led by graduate tutors, a seminar series focusing on ‘Race and Ethnicity in Antiquity’ delivered by tutors from the Faculty of Classics, visit the Ashmolean Museum, and receive guidance and advice from academic mentors to write a short essay on a Classical subject. At the end of the week’s programme, having written your short essay, you will take part in a 20–30 minute Oxford-style tutorial, during which you will receive individual feedback on your work, and a talk on applying for and studying Classical subjects at University. The sessions don’t require any prior knowledge but you will be required to do preparatory reading before the summer school and attend daily language classes, seminars, and mentoring sessions to provide you with all the information and resources you will need to complete your tutorial essay by the end of the week. In addition to the academic work, you’ll be living, eating, and working in Wadham College and the Faculty of Classics alongside current students.

WHERE: Wadham College, University of Oxford
WHEN: Monday 22nd August – Friday 26th August (dates inclusive)
SUBJECTS: Classical literature, Ancient History, Classical Greek, Archaeology
STRUCTURE: 5 days of intensive study, comprising group lectures, language seminars, essay writing, and tutorials in small groups. Students will also be required to complete an essay of 1,500 words with the help of an academic mentor.

ELIGIBILITY: This summer school is primarily intended for students currently in year 12. If you not in Year 12 (but are over 16) and have a strong reason to think that you will benefit from attending the summer school please contact us (access.assistant@wadh.ox.ac.uk) prior to submitting an application to discuss your situation. Previous experience of any Classical subjects is NOT required but you must be a student at a state school or sixth-form college.

ACCOMMODATION: provided by the College
COSTS: None. Meals and accommodation are both provided free of charge. Wadham is also able to contribute up to £50 for travel costs to attend the summer school. If your travel costs are likely to be significantly more than £50 and it would be difficult to cover the remaining cost please get in touch: access.assistant@wadh.ox.ac.uk.

Y7/8 science club

Dear all,

I am looking for 5-6 reliable and committed students to help run the Y7/Y8 science club with me. It will run every week after school for around 40-50 minutes, and should be good fun!

As part of your role you will:
- liaise with the technicians to order equipment and plan sessions
- work with Ms Elias to plan sessions and work within H&S regulations
- develop communication and team work skills (always positive for UCAS!)
- encourage younger students to love science as much as we do

If you're interested please drop me and email and we will meet briefly before the holidays - probably on Wednesday lunchtime.

Yours
Ms Elias

Y12 Chemistry Retakes

Dear all,

Due to some "irregularities" with the test papers that were sat in the Y12 mocks we require you to all take another paper in your lesson this week. This is purposefully short notice.

12c and 12d - Tuesday
12e - Wednesday

These papers will be marked, and combined with your existing papers to generate your predicted grade.

Yours
Ms Elias

Talk by author Emily Hauser: 6th July, 2 - 3pm in L14

On 6th July, we are very pleased to welcome author Emily Hauser to Cheney School. Between 2 and 3pm she is delivering a talk about her new novel, "For the Most Beautiful".

In her debut novel, the legend of the Trojan War - peopled with gods and heroes - is re-interpreted and re-imagined, told from the perspective of the women caught up in the epic tale. Emily's talk will explore how she used these ancient stories in her writing.

Her talk will include drinks and an opportunity to ask Emily questions about her work and the process of publishing a novel.

It will take place between 2 and 3pm in the classics centre (L14) and is open to all.

Please let me or Mr Gimson know if you would like to attend.

Many thanks.
