UCAS Progress

Thank you very much to the five people who have recently paid and sent - everyone else applying through UCAS this year, please do the same before 6th November.  Just a reminder that paying and sending gets the form to Cheney and that we then forward it to UCAS with references, which you will see before they go. There is going to be a big rush just before the deadline but we will get your forms sent on as quickly as possible.  We will do our best to get your form sent on within 10 working days, though as I mentioned in an earlier blog post, we may take 15 in the immediate aftermath of 6th November when there will be a very large number of applicants.  The earlier you pay and send the better - we can always send your form back to you if there is a mistake - you can send it back to us again without paying twice.  I hope that is all clear - see your PL or me if you have any questions.

Sixth Form Library Use: Closure During Certain Lessons

The Library will be closed at these times because:
a)      The Yr 7s need to use the seating space & the computer space for their reading scheme.
b)      We don’t want the Sixth Form to be disturbed by the Yr 7s.
c)      We don’t want the Yr 7s to be disturbed by the Sixth Form.

Generally the behaviour of the Sixth Form in the Library is good: thank you. However, there have been some examples of Sixth Formers eating, using poor language or using the computers inappropriately, & this makes it harder for staff to teach younger students how to behave well in the Library. Please help us to keep the Library as a pleasant place to study.

Thanks, Mrs Marsh

Quantitative Chemistry coursework, Year 13

Apologies again for the practical issues this morning.  I'm very happy to let you know that we have just solved the mystery and replaced the dodgy chemical with some good stuff.  As ever the technicians have gone above and beyond to help us sort this out so please do thank them if you see them this week (hint, hint, hint).

13e, I would like to arrange a time for you to do your quantitative before the end of the week.  The simplest time would be on Wednesday after the early finish.  I realise this is your free time but after gaining a free today and if I can get cover for tutor time, you would only have lost half an hour of your own time. Please come and see me/email me if you're unhappy with this plan.

13b we can go ahead as planned - evaluative tomorrow morning and quant on Friday morning.

EPQ

Thank you very much to everyone who presented and supported at the Presentation Evening on Friday - it was a very good evening and showed what an amazing amount of thought and preparation goes into the EPQ.   The presentations were very varied and very interesting.  The audience very much enjoyed them.

Year Twelves who would like to take part in the EPQ in the next twelve months are invited to a meeting on Friday 6th November at lunchtime in L14

Cambridge Applicants Meeting Tuesday 12.50 L14

Please bring your draft SAQ with you.

Logging activities for DofE

12E DOE Group for Thursday 22nd October

Can I please ask all pupils in the Thursday DofE lesson to make sure they are wearing suitable footwear and coats/jackets that are suitable for the outdoors on Thursday 22nd of October. We will be outside for part of the lesson.

UCAS Progress

A big thank you to all early applicants for sending your UCAS applications in on time.  I would encourage everyone applying this year to practice the same good teamwork: maintaining really good communication with your PL is very important.  We will try to send your UCAS form within ten working days of you paying and sending (which gets your form to us, not to UCAS itself).

Please pay and send before half term to avoid a delay in us sending your application due to a bottle neck on 6 Nov. Applications received on 6 November (or late ones which appear after the deadline) may be sent more slowly because we will be overwhelmed.

Please keep your PL updated on your offers as they come in, and on your progress in general.

UCAS Early Applicant Progress

Thank you early applicants a) for your patience and b) for all your help in helping me to get everything in place.  References are now getting close to being finished.  I need to discuss almost all of them with Progress Leaders, Ms. Doherty, Ms. O'Keefe and other staff in the subjects you are applying for, so it is likely that most of your forms will be sent to UCAS on Monday (when I will be working uninterruptedly on them, with my lessons covered).  I will e-mail you individually to call you in to get your form and reference checked and sent - please expect this to be Monday not Thursday as hoped, but still well ahead of Thursday 16th at 6pm.

Early Applicants Progress Update

This morning I have been working through all of your references and noting where the gaps are and what more needs to be done.  I plan to do the same tomorrow and first thing on Thursday morning.

By the middle of the day on Thursday I hope to have filled most of the gaps, and to be ready to start sending some of your forms, with more to follow on the Friday and Monday. I will call you when I am ready.  In the meantime, please make sure that you have finalised your personal statement and have paid and sent.  I am not sure that I am going to make my own internalised deadline of Thursday 8th for all of you, but don't worry, we are on track to meet the real UCAS deadline of Thursday 15th October.

Mentoring Scheme

Hi,

All of those Sixth Formers who have registered as Mentors your volunteering starts today. Please could the listed students please meet in the common room during tutor time today, please make sure you register first.

Remember, it is essential that you are all committed to the scheme, your mentees have been carefully selected for you by heads of colleges and we believe that this scheme will be a real benefit to the pupils you will mentor. We are currently waiting for the Vinspired to register us as a school and you can then log your volunteering hours on there and get a volunteering qualification, an extra string to your bow as they say.

Good Luck and I will see you all there.

Trip to the Aegean World Gallery - Wednesday 7 October

Dear Parents/Carers

On Wednesday 7 October the Classical Civilisation AS group will be visiting the Ashmolean Museum to see the collection of Minoan artefacts in the Aegean World Gallery.

While there, they will have a talk by Dr Philomen Probert on the extensive Linear B tablet collection. This is a really exciting opportunity to see some of the relics we have been exploring over the past two sessions.

We will set out on foot from school promptly at 1.30pm so students will need to come straight to L14 from Period 5 on Wednesday instead of Tutor Time. The tour will finish at 3pm, at which point students can make their own way home from town.

The trip is has no costs as entrance to the Museum is free, and we are travelling by foot.

If you would like your son / daughter to attend and you give them parental permission to do so, please fill out the slip below and bring it to the School Shop by Tuesday 6 October.

If you have any questions about the trip itself or the East Oxford Community Classics Centre at Cheney School, please feel welcome to contact me on the email address below.

Yours faithfully

Dr Lorna Robinson
