Gold Duke of Edinburgh Practice Walk

I am emailing with a reminder that there will be a practice walk for all students who are taking part in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Participants will meet at the Flowing Well pub OX13 6RB at 10am, the walk should take around 2 hours and students will have their phones in order to contact you towards the end of the walk.

A reminder that all participants are required to practise the skills such as: compass bearing, pacing, hill walking, contour lines and map reading.

I look forward to seeing the participants there.

Spectroscopy in a Suitcase

Year 12 and 13 Chemists,

Next Friday, some Oxford University students will be bringing some amazing chemistry equipment into Cheney for us to play with, this will include an IR spectrometer (worth ~ £20 000).

They will run two sessions, the first during P1&2 and the second during P3&4.

12c - you are timetabled with LEL P1&2 and are automatically signed up.
12d and 12e - you need to choose a session and sign up (see below).  You will need to check with your teachers first if you are going to miss a lesson.
Year 13 - the sessions will be mostly aimed at year 12 but if you want to brush up on your IR spectroscopy you are also welcome to join us!

Practice Walk Meeting

Can I ask that all DofE students who are attending the practice walk on Sunday 8 May (from the Flowing Well in Sunningwell) to meet in C26 during Friday lunch time at 12:50 for 10 minutes to run through the plan for Sunday please.

Summer Kickstart Work Experience Programme

 The KickStart Programme is a structured transition from full time education into employment, apprenticeships and further or higher education within the field of hospitality, leisure and tourism. It provides a platform for students to gain real insight into the wealth of opportunities on offer, as well as quality work experience which massively boosts their CV and employability potential.

This voluntary three week programme over the summer months provides an excellent transition through:

• Pre-placement training including information, advice and guidance, work tasters and 3 recognised Level 2 certified short courses
• Two week placement which follows the Springboard’s work experience quality standard INSPIRE
• Mock interviews- directly with the businesses
• Mentoring support from the Springboard team throughout the programme

The programme aims to increase candidates confidence and equip them with the valuable skills needed to succeed in the world of work. Through working with renowned companies throughout London and the South East, candidates are able to develop their skills and understanding of the hospitality industry. Springboard is supported through funding therefore there is no cost involved. Although the three weeks work experience is unpaid, travel and lunch expenses are paid.

Dates for the programme are –

• 27th June for 3 weeks
• 4th July for 3 weeks
• 25th July for 3 weeks
• 5th Sept for 3 weeks

Fully Funded Summer School at the University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen is hosting a fully-funded 4 day summer school this year, Monday 25^th – Thursday 28^th July, to give pupils a flavour of studying in Scotland. 

The programme will be relevant to a pupil’s subject interests, it is free of charge and all those who attend will receive a £100 travel bursary.

Below is a summary of the programme:

·         - Monday 25^th July to Thursday 28^th July 2016

·         - Lectures, seminar sessions, practical classes, sight-seeing tours and social activities 

·         - Relevant to your subject interests

·         - For AS level students aiming to begin university in September 2017

·         - Accommodation in individual study bedrooms and meals will be provided

·         - All participants will be awarded a £100 travel bursary to put towards their travel expenses

From Rome to Panem: epic, satire and the city

 

The Faculty of Classics, together with Oriel College and Regent's Park College, are proud to offer UK Year 11 and Year 12 students an introduction to studying Classics and English at university. The day will include a taster seminar, lunch in the main dining hall, two college tours with current students, and in-depth information on the Oxford admissions process. The day is entirely free of charge.

Cities rise and fall; they are the highest expression of a civilisation’s cultural achievements and they plumb the depths of corruption and degradation. Aeneas flees from the burning city of Troy to fulfil his destiny to found Rome but that can only be achieved through the deaths of young men and women and the destruction of individual hopes. Satan builds the city of Pandaemonium to destroy humanity but gazes with hate-filled longing on the salvation represented by the heavenly city. Disaffected satirists despise and exploit the hunger of citizens for bread and circuses from ancient Rome to the Capitol of Panem. They hate the corruption they see but know that they are part of it. Beauty and power, corruption and filth are equally exciting.  This taster day will give you the opportunity to explore literature ancient and modern, familiar and unfamiliar and decide whether winning the glittering prize of the city is ever worth the sacrifices required.
