UCAS Update

Thank you very much to tutors and students for your work on the last stages of the UCAS process.  By 9am tomorrow, I think that 80 forms will  have been sent.

I am expecting to be in from 9am on Tuesday 20th December, and plan to use the morning to try to send the references of the following students. I expect to send you a copy of  your reference in the course of Monday, with a time when you can come in to school to get your form sent.  If you are away, please make sure that you have the mobile given on your UCAS form switched on from 9am on theTuesday so that I can do the final checks with you on the phone next to a computer where you can make any necessary changes.  It would be very helpful if you can make sure that your Personal Statement has been carefully proof-read, and that all the details on your form are absolutely accurate.

Students whose forms I hope to have ready to send on Tuesday. I cannot absolutely promise that they will be done, but I will do my best:

Serene Shibli Sexton
Holly Napier
Riane Idris
Shameela Sarwar

Mahaz Amjad
Aldrei Soliman
Lauren Grayson
Andrei Lidov
Will Davies
Matheus Machado

The forms of the following nine students will be finalised as early as possible next term, and certainly by 15th January:

Zita Lloyd-Shogbesan
Emily Wilcox
Kyeisha Nero
Arands Rugens
Louis Cartledge
Atef Chowdhury
Tasnim Hoque
Naseem Hussain
Hannah Toohey

If your name is not on either list, please let me know

UCAS Submission Final Final Deadline

A reminder that today is the final day for submission of UCAS forms to guarantee that they are sent by 15th January.  Please pay and send even if you have still got problems with some aspect of the form.  I am very happy to send the form back later for changes, but I must know by the end of today who is and isn't applying.  Communicate directly with your tutor and with me if you are having any problems.  Many thanks.

UCAS Update

Thank you very much indeed as ever to your tutors and to all applicants too for very good work on getting UCAS forms finalised.  I am hoping to get as many as possible finalised before lunchtime on Thursday.  Other commitments will make it hard for me to do very much more on Friday morning.

However, I will be at school, and the school will be open on the morning of Tuesday 20th December, from 9am.  I will post a list on the blog of students whose forms I expect to be ready for that day.  If you are not away on holiday, you will be able to come into school so that we can get your form sent off. Alternatively, if you can make sure that you remain available on your mobile and by e-mail we can finalise the form remotely - though this is not such a good alternative and will be more time-consuming all round.  I will post a list of forms which I expect to be ready first thing on Friday, and will ask to you sign up on a list outside Ms. Stratford's door for Tuesday morning.

There will be a small number of forms which will have to wait until January - I hope to send as many as possible on Thursday 5th January, and the remainder on or soon after Monday 9th January so that everything is done well in advance of the national UCAS deadline on 15th January.

Year Twelve Event in Hall Period Three Friday

On Friday Period Three, all Year Twelves will be in the Assembly Hall to meet former Cheney students currently at university who will be talking about their experience of the cities where they are studying and the courses they are taking.  This will give you all a very helpful snapshot of the kinds of things you might be doing in two or three years time.  You will be meeting with our visitors in small groups and getting the chance to ask questions of them as individuals.

Please come direct to the Hall where you will be registered.

Any questions to me please

UCAS Progress

A very big thank you to all all tutors and teaching staff, and to all applicants.  Thanks to the references provided by staff and tutors, and proactive involvement in the process by applicants, we are making substantial headway.  60 UCAS forms have been sent, and 36 are at some stage in the pipeline.  Please keep talking to me and to your tutors if you have any concerns. I can guarantee that all forms which have been paid and sent now will be sent on to UCAS, if not all quite by Christmas, certainly by the national deadline on 15th January.

However, I want to be very clear that if you want to apply through UCAS this year, you must do so now. The school deadline was 17th October - precisely because we knew just how much time it takes to get each individual form sent.  If you do not pay and send by Wednesday 14th December, I will not be able to send your form to UCAS in this application cycle - you will need to apply in your gap year. I will always make exceptions to this rule if there are special circumstances, but you will need to communicate closely with your tutor and with me.  Please do not expect to come back in January having just decided to apply, and to get your form sent off. We will not have time to get everything ready for 15th January.

As you'll see below there are three non-residential scholarships available. It would have to be very bright students who are passionate about the environment/social justice'.

Law/Politics Website

http://www.fljs.org/ has interesting articles, podcasts and announcements of public lectures mostly here in Oxford.

Social Mobility Foundation Information Received Today - please follow up and discuss with staff if interested

Dear Mr Gimson,
I hope you’re well. My name is Richard and I am emailing on behalf of an organisation called the Social Mobility Foundation. I tried to contact you this morning but was unable to reach you by telephone. I hope you don’t mind me emailing you with details of some of our free of charge summer work experience programmes.
I was calling to check that you had received our promotional materials regarding our free of charge Aspiring Professionals Programme? The programme supports high-achieving year 12 students from low-income backgrounds access top universities and professions.
We offer support through our four pillars:
1.       Mentoring by a professional via email
2.       Tailored skills sessions and career workshops
3.       University application support and guidance
4.       Internships with top employers

How students receive our four pillars of support is dependent on where they live. Further details below.
Watch our video to hear from SMF students.
Students must meet our eligibility criteria, set out below. We do take extenuating circumstances into account, so if there are children in care, for example, even though they might not reach the academic criteria, we will look at their application on an individual basis.
Academic Criteria
Ø  Year 12
Ø  Achieved 5 A grades at GCSE or 4 A grades if your schools GCSE pass rate is below 50%
Ø  Predicted ABB at A Level (AAB for the APP J.P. Morgan Residential)
Background Criteria
Ø  Students must have been either eligible for Free School Meals any time since Year 7 (the income of the parent[s] they live with is/was below £16,190)
OR
Ø  Be the first generation of their family to be going to university and undertook their GCSEs at a school where 20% or more students are on Free School Meals

APP Residential
APP Residential offers the opportunity to undertake a one or two week internship with a top employer in London with all expenses paid. Whilst on their residential and in addition to the internship, students receive skill sessions and university application support. They also receive a mentor will be from the employer that they undertake their placement with.  We also continue to support these students throughout university until they are in full time employment.
APP Residential is available to students interested in:
Accountancy (KPMG)| Banking & Finance (J.P. Morgan)| Engineering & Physics (CH2M) | Law | Medicine (NHS)
APP Reach
We are very keen to work with schools, colleges and parts of the country that do not usually have young people on our programme. Therefore if this applies to you and your top achievers don’t quite meet our criteria, you should encourage them to apply as they may be eligible to receive support. APP Reach is designed to offer as many aspects of our programme as we can to people who could benefit from our activities and resources, subject to our capacity and their location. All students will receive a mentor and access to online resources. To find out more about APP Reach, please contact us.
Students must apply by 9am, Monday 19th December 2016 by completing our application form here.
